Youth Earn-A-Bike

Hey. . . Wanna bike?

The PEDAL Youth Earn-A-Bike (EAB) program is a pre-employment experience as well as out-of-school learning opportunity for Vancouver youth ages 12 to 18. The EAB program's goal is to give youth who don't have access to bicycles a chance to build and earn one for themselves.

Prospective participants apply to the program, indicating their interest and their level of commitment, and are selected on the basis of interest, need and suitability. Those chosen to participate select a bike to work on and complete a 5 week course which includes both skills training and hands on work.

In order to “earn” their bicycles, participants fulfill requirements designed to teach substantial pre-employment skills. Participants self-select themselves for the program and agree to take responsibility for their conduct, work and attendance.

The hours spent at the program center, located at 1820 Pandora St., are all applied learning opportunities. Participants learn problem solving skills, gain an understanding of simple mechanical systems, acquire job skills, study bike safety, and learn basic bicycle mechanics and maintenance.

When they complete the program and a predetermined number of volunteer hours, each participant receives a helmet and the bicycle they have helped to build.
